Agricultural Biotechnology (Agritech)

Biotechnology has revolutionized the field of agriculture by combining emerging biotechnological tools and techniques such as genetic engineering, tissue engineering, molecular diagnostics, vaccines, molecular markers, and plant tissue culture. Crop biotechnology is a major technique in agricultural biotechnology that produces desired plant traits by utilizing several crop modification techniques such as traditional breeding, plant mutagenesis, polyploidy, protoplast fusion, RNA interference, transgenics, and genome editing.

The major focus of agriculture, which is crop quality and nutritional value the crop, is achieved by utilizing biotechnological tools. For instance, developing golden rice using genetic engineering techniques can solve the problem of vitamin deficiency. This rice is rich in beta carotene, which converts into vitamin A when required, meeting the body’s need for vitamin A. Moreover, agricultural biotechnology can provide solutions for several challenges faced in agriculture such as insect resistance, herbicide tolerance, disease resistance, temperature tolerance, and quality traits. Supportive government agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Department of Agriculture (USDA), are also bolstering research and development activities in the field of agriculture biotechnology.
