Abstract

Modelling water and nitrogen dynamics of different cropping systems under border irrigation method, drip irrigation method and rainfed conditions in the North China Plain

The water demand is increasing worldwide, while the availability of fresh water is decreasing— water scarcity affecting most of the globe. Presently, groundwater depletion and degradation due to conventional farming practices are major problems. Therefore, it is crucially important to ensure the efficient use of irrigation water through improved irrigation management practices, which will help to address water conservation problems.

In my project, I used WHCNS model to assess the water and nitrogen dynamics of different cropping systems. Firstly, I used this model for Quzhou county of Handan city, Hebei province. There were different cereal-based cropping systems with different irrigation management strategies. As a part of Ph.D. research, my second research site was Yuanyang county of Zhengzhou city, Henan province. At Yuanyang experimental station, I worked on the effect of different irrigation methods in response to different cropping systems. In addition, I also tested the simulation performance of the model using Pakistan site data.
